The Boot Charity Fund
Land's End to John O'Groats Bike Ride
23rd July 2005 - 28th July 2005

In January 2004 some of the regulars of The Boot public house in Dullingham decided to raise money for local charities.  They agreed to cycle the equivalent distance from Land's End to John O'Groats on an exercise bike set up inside the warmth of the pub.  The Boot Charity Fund Committee was formed to organise the event and in March 2004,  60 people took it in turns to pedal the 874 miles in 44 hours.

At the end of the event, (and probably after a pint or two), someone suggested that in 2005 the ride should take place for real.  As a result 18 people have agreed to make the journey on the 23rd  July, cycling two at a time, to pedal the length of the Great Britain in order to raise money for the following groups:

ClicSargent - ClicSargent offers practical hands-on care.  Not just clinical services but financial and emotional support.  Each day five families in the UK are told their child has cancer or leukaemia.  From that moment on their lives will never be the same again.  Most children will survive; some will unfortunately die; but the scars on the family will remain.  ClicSargent's role is to try and help children and their families cope.

Milton Children's Hospice - The Children's Hospice first opened in 1989 and is now of East Anglia's few Children's Hospices.  Milton is set in its own grounds and has 7 individual bedrooms and additional facilities for families to stay.  The hospice is a home from home for families and has specially adapted transport that is used to take the children on outings. The staff endeavour to work alongside families during both happy and sad times.

UK Youth (The network for quality work with young people)

Their work with young people can and does make a lasting impact by encouraging young people to take responsibility and become involved citizens.  The UK Youth network brings together local youth groups, associations, regional bodies and national youth organisation.  They collaborate with other voluntary organisations as well as with government departments.  Its programmes are used by a range of organisations and are already proving their value to the developing Connexions Partnership.
